unchosen design ideas | デザイン ボツ案

When working at a design company, there are a lot of opportunities to come up with cool design ideas. And there are many many ideas, which weren't chosen by the clients. What happens to those unchosen ideas? Unfortunately, they are usually being forgotten. Now I think about it, I wish I had design reviews for them.

The other day, I was organizing documents on my desk at work, and I found a screen saver idea that had never gone up live. I personally think it would have been visually a fun screen saver.

The concept was "to catch viewers off guard."

it starts with a scene in the train.....

After a bit, the user will see some unrealistic scene outside the train, like...
a bare on a scooter passes the train, or a man on the ostrich passes the train.

Longer one leaves the screensaver on,
stranger the scenery outside the train will get,
such as the train goes into the water.

If this idea was chosen, I would have had fun coming up with weird scenes that happens outside of the train and visualizing them... I'd love to know what was missing in this screen saver idea.

毎日仕事をしていると、たまにふと思い出すボツ案たち。どうしてクライアントに選ばれなかったのか？とか、何か改善すべきところはあるのか？とか、学生のころにしていたデザイナーとして成長するための当たり前のデザインレビューがなされないまま、そのかわいそうなデザインアイディアたちが忘れ去られていく。

つい最近、仕事場のデスクの整理をしていたら出てきたのが、今年の始めごろに提案したスクリーンセーバーのアイディア。我ながら、形になったらビジュアル的に面白そうだと思ったんだけれど、ボツ案となってしまい忘れてしまっていた。

このスクリーンセーバーのコンセプトは、「ユーザーをさりげなく”およ？”っと思わせる」です。何の変哲もない風景が車窓からが見えるシーンから始まり、しばらくすると、現実にはありえない光景が見えてきます。例えば、「スクーターに乗った小熊が電車を追い抜いていく」や「ダチョウに乗った人が電車を追い抜いていく」など、最初は「いったいこの電車はどれだけ遅く走っているんだ・・・？」と思わせるくらいの違和感で、スクリーンセーバーが起動している時間が長ければ長いほど、車窓から見える光景は海の中に突入するなど、奇妙度がエスカレートしていきます。

もし、クライアントにこの案を選んでもらえてたら、面白いスクリーンセーバーができただろうと思うのは私だけなのだろうか･･･?
